HAC vs Epping - Round 1

The 2014 Suburban Rugby season has kicked off for HAC Rugby taking on  the Epping Rams at Epping.

The day started out with a tight struggle in 4th Grade with neither side being able to dominate and the majority of the match being spent in the middle of the field. There was some strong defence shown by HAC as Epping endeavoured to swing the ball wide. Whilst HAC countered by taking the ball up the middle. As always there was a strong performance from Dave and Paul Hewett. It was also great to see Darren Hicks make his return to the Blood and Mustard after a few years off. At the end of a tough game the final result was nil all.

Third grade started with the Epping Rams running in a few early tries and taking an early lead. Epping were once again swinging the ball wide with the HAC players being forced to make some scrambling defence. However as the game developed the strength of the Hawkesbury forward pack slowed down Eppings quick ball. This allowed the HAC backline to come into play making a strong comeback in the second half. Whilst HAC finished with a wet sail Epping were able to hang on with the final score Epping 27 defeated HAC 21.

Second Grade continued the tough encounters for the day with the two forward packs locked in a tough battle. This was another game played predominantly in the middle of the field with both teams having very few scoring opportunities. HAC showed strong defence throughout the game with Epping being unable to cross the HAC try line. However two penalties saw Epping leading by 6 to nil with only one minute remaining. In the last play of the game the pressure applied by HAC finally paid off with HAC crossing the Epping try line. A successful conversion after time had run out saw the final score HAC 7 defeated Epping 6.

First Grade were keen to carry on the good start to the season of the lower grades. However Epping were also keen to get there season off to a good start demonstrating the speed they had in their outside backs by running in three quick tries early in the match. Epping showed great enthusiasm throughout the match with their speed to the breakdown giving them the opportunity to take advantage of the speed in their backline. This saw Epping take a 15 nil lead into half time. Epping continued to show their enthusiasm in the 2nd half running in three more tries. Late in the 2nd half the HAC fight back finally paid off crossing for the only try of the match. Epping quickly responded running in one last try to see a final score of Epping 47 defeated HAC 5.

Round 2 of the season will see HAC take on Kings Old Boys on Saturday 12th April 2014 at the College Oval. 4th Grade kicks off at 12.00pm with 1st Grade kicking off at 3.15pm. Everyone is welcome to come along and cheer on the Hawkesbury’s oldest football team
